Objectives in science:

In year 7

Students build the foundations needed to understand the world around them. Underpinned by scientific enquiry, students will develop an understanding of the big ideas in science across all three disciplines:

  • Organisms, genes and interdependence (biology)
  • Matter, reactions and the Earth (chemistry)
  • Forces, energy and waves (physics)

Modules covered:

  • Cells - reproduction - ecosystems - changing states - acids and alkalis - rocks - forces in action - energy transfers - sound

In year 8

Students will study a number of topics aimed at continuing to build an understanding of the world around them. Underpinned by scientific enquiry, students will further their knowledge of the big ideas in science across all three disciplines:

  • Organisms, genes and interdependence (biology)
  • Matter, reactions and the Earth (chemistry)
  • Forces, energy and waves (physics)

Modules covered:

  • Digestion - evolution - respiration and movement - elements, compounds and mixtures - chemical reactions - energy resources - speed - heating and cooling - light

In year 9:

Students will study a number of topics aimed at applying their understanding of the world around them. Underpinned by scientific enquiry, students will deepen their knowledge of the big ideas in science across all three disciplines:

  • Organisms, genes and interdependence (biology)
  • Matter, reactions and the Earth (chemistry)
  • Forces, energy and waves (physics)

Modules covered:

  • Breathing - inheritance - photosynthesis - The Periodic Table - reactivity - climate - pressure - electricalcircuits - wave properties

  • Interpret and evaluate a range of quantitative and qualitative information, explaining how experimental procedures could be improved

In year 8
