Religious studies

Objectives in religious studies

In year 7:

Students investigate Ibstock’s Parish Church – St. Deny’s, looking at church furniture, rites of passage and the role the church plays in the local community. Students then research other places of worship identifying similarities and differences. They consider the impact of religious leaders, focusing on Abraham, Moses and Guru Nanak. Students identify locations of holy places such as Lourdes, discuss the reasons why religious people go on pilgrimage and explore the link between holy places and miracles. In the topic of creation and the environment students investigate how the world was made and how it should be treated looking at scientific, Christian and Hindu points of view.

  • Parish church - places of worship - religious leaders - pilgrimage - creation and the environment

In year 8:

Students will reflect on the importance of belonging in both school and the wider community, explaining how religion can give people a sense of identity and belonging. Students will investigate the life of Jesus and its portrayal in different areas of the world. Students will assess where they turn to for guidance and how sacred texts provide guidance to different faiths. Students will investigate the idea of God considering divine existence, benevolence and influence in the world.

Modules covered:

  • Belonging - guidance - Jesus in life and death - belief

In year 9:

Students will reflect on moral issues such as war and animal rights, analysing how religion can give guidance on such matters as well as reflecting on their own points of view. Students will investigate and analyse evidence regarding beliefs about life after death. Students will investigate how Christian beliefs have impacted on the importance of marriage, the rights and wrongs of divorce and sexual relationships.
