# Mathematics

### Objectives in mathematics:

In year 7

• Develop fluency by consolidating mathematical capability from KS2 • Reason mathematically by thinking deductively, in geometry, number, algebra and statistics
• Solve problems by selecting and using the appropriate mathematical concepts

Modules covered

• Number, structure and calculation - algebraic notation and vocabulary - geometric properties and construction - statistical measures and probability - ratio, proportion and rates of change

In year 8

Students will be taught to:

• Develop fluency: by selecting and using the appropriate calculation strategies
• Reason mathematically: by extending an understanding of the number system
• Solve problems: by developing the use of mathematics to interpret more complex scenarios.

• Number, structure and calculation - algebraic notation and vocabulary - geometric properties and construction - statistical measures and probability - ratio, proportion and rates of change

In year 9:

Students will be taught to:

• Develop fluency: by moving freely between the numeric, algebraic, graphical and diagrammatic strands.
• Reason mathematically: by interpreting the structure of a problem and making and testing conjectures.
• Solve problems: by modelling situations mathematically and expressing the results in a variety of forms.

Modules covered:

• Generate and describe linear number sequences
• Write a fraction in its lowest terms by cancelling common factors
• Find percentages of quantities
• Calculate the volume of cubes and cuboids
• Use coordinates in all four quadrants
• Calculate and interpret the mean as an average of a set of discrete data
• Explain mathematical ideas using QWC

In year 8

• Apply the four operations with decimal numbers
• Write a quantity as a fraction or percentage of another
• Add, subtract, multiply and divide with fractions and mixed numbers
• Check calculations using approximation, estimation or inverse operations
• Substitute numbers into formulae
• Solve linear equations in one unknown
• Calculate surface area of cubes and cuboids
• Explain mathematical ideas using QWC

In year 9

• Apply the four operations with negative numbers
• Solve problems involving percentage change, including original value problems
• Solve linear equations with unknowns on both sides
• Plot and interpret graphs of linear functions
• Apply the formulae for circumference and area of a circle
• Calculate theoretical probabilities for single events
• Find and use the nth term for a linear sequence
• Explain mathematical ideas using QWC
